Munich was a place for us to rest and relax after our adventures in Finland, Italy, Poland, and Prague. We wanted a few flex days before Christopher's big family reunion, in case anything terrible happened (ie: missed a flight, lost our passports, unfortunate hospital delay, etc.) Luckily, none of these things happened and we had a few days to enjoy this great German city!
We, of course, watched the Glockenspiel. (A little over rated, but necessary tourist activity. The jousting horses were the best.)
Naturally, we ate a pretzel and a bratwurst at the Viktualienmarkt. (A must do!)
David told us about this cool activity we should check out: river surfing. It was a mix of wake boarding, surfing and the FlowRider surfing simulator you see at water parks. It was pretty cool!
Then we spent the afternoon sunbathing in the Englisher Gardens (what the locals do)... complete with floating the (glacier, ice-cold freezing) river. I'm pretty sure we weren't supposed to jump in. There was a sign that said "Swimming Forbidden" with skull underneath. haha... but all the locals were doing it and they said it was fine. I'm glad I experienced it once, but wow! my body has never been shocked to that extreme temperature... ever.
After warming up in the sun, we got some ice cream at the supermarket. Crazy enough, it was cheaper to buy a box of 8 than purchase 2 individually. While we were scarfing them down, a small Hungarian man came up to us. We didn't understand him, but it seemed like he was begging for money. So we gave him the rest of our ice cream cones and he was so happy! He walked across the street where his cute wife and little boy were waiting. They were so delighted for the treat. I love being able to help people. It made my day.
We finished off our evening the American way: Marriott, ESPN on the big screen TV, fridge for the chocolate stash, unlimited ice machine for our drinks... it was such a treat. Plus, since it was our 5-year anniversary celebration, we got free fruit plates and brownies! Such a lovely day in a beautiful city.
